Benjamin Dunn and the Animal Orchestra release new Christmas EP

Drawing on the works of C.S. Lewis for inspiration, Benjamin Dunn & The Animal Orchestra achieve a rare fusion of innocence and sophistication on Fable. These songs reveal considerable craft both lyrically and musically, even as they capture a childlike sense of wonder. Dunn explores Divine themes both directly and through fantasy characters, avoiding familiar language in favor of something more idiosyncratic. The buoyantly jangling “My Name Is Eustace!” and the coolly throbbing “Caspian” reference Lewis’ famous Narnia novels. Travel (both physical and spiritual) provides a thread of lyric continuity in songs like “Sail to the End” and “London.” Synthesizers, heroic rock guitars, orchestral drumming, and the occasional banjo give Fable a lush yet quirky feel. Dunn delights in delicate textures, like the spacy ambiance washing over “The Singing Elephant” and the fusion of acoustic folk and electronica lighting up “Stare at the Stars.” “It’s Not the End” closes the song cycle with a symphonic-pop flourish. Fable takes listeners on a journey into the mysteries and revelations of faith.
